Abstract

Catherine's love of colour is expressed here in her abstract work. While living in Manhattan in the 1980's Catherine studied the works of the American abstract expressionist painters of the 1950-60's. This experience has had a lasting effect on her work. Her regular trips to India have inspired her recent work.

Catching Colour II, 2015

Returning to Kerala on the Malabar Coast of Southern India Catherine delves deeper in her response to the vibrant colours of this place and its people. Spending time with the slum dwellers of Thiruvananthapuram and visiting the vast 18th century Travancor market, Chalai Bazaar Catherine makes visual commentary on the spirit, dignity and humour that overlays the chaos and extreme poverty of daily life. Catherine makes onsite sketches with gouache and then paints from these drawings in her studio near Scone in the Upper Hunter.
