Still Life

For Catherine still life painting is a place to explore relationships between objects, colour and light. Her influences include the 18th century French painter Chardin, the 19th century Italian painter Georgio Morandi as well as the 20th C Australian photographer Max Dupain. Like these artists Catherine works to understand stillness, composition and light in a deeply contemplative manner.

The Brunswick Drawings, 2016

Returning to her first love, still life, Catherine set up a studio in Brunswick, Melbourne last year and painted this body of work. Inspired by the beauty and calm of ordinary objects Catherine sets up compositions and then spends time observing their relationships of tone and form. “There is a moment of grace in this process when everything else in your mind melts away and you are held firmly in the stillness of that creative moment”.
